What is there to do while you’re in Lake Brunner? A whole lot!

From simple walks and day trips, to private tours and dining options further afield – let our local knowledge assist you!
Moana Village/Lake Brunner:

- There’s plenty to explore without having to leave the village! From fishing and boating to strolling around the lake edge, there are activities for everyone. Click Here for a map of Lake Brunner and Moana village.
- Check out the Fairy Dell nestled amongst the native bush along the Rakaitane bush walk, or spot the glow worms hidden beneath the ferns along the Velenski track. These two options take only 20-minutes each, and are perfect for all ages!
Looking for more of an all-day acitivity? Something to really make you feel you’ve earned that beer or ice cream at the end of the day?

- Take a drive around the other side of the lake and visit our sister-building which is home to the Lake Brunner Eco Lodge. Walk up the Carew Falls track, and soak in the spray of pristine, glacial, water.
- Walk or Bike the recently constructed Lake Brunner Scenic Trail, which stretches 9.5km around the lake edge through untouched native bush.
- Those who don’t mind a bit of uphill may prefer to take the DOC track up Mt Te Kinga and experience the stunning views over Lake Brunner and the Hohonu Ranges from its summit.
So, you’ve been out and about all day – but you’re not quite ready to call it a night? We’re selected some relaxing experiences to enjoy Moana after dark (and after a filling meal at our own Kingfisher Restaurant and Bar!)

- The sun sets best in the West! Take an evening stroll along the lakefront, and catch golden hour as the sun sets over the Hohonu mountain range at the Western edge of Lake Brunner.
- On a clear sky, the remoteness of Lake Brunner makes it the perfect spot for Star Gazing. Whether you enjoy snapping photos, or capturing mental images – the unpolluted night skies are spectacular. Soak up the views from the comfort of our private, woodfired hot tubs in our Hotel Lake Brunner Stargazing Sessions.
Getting Out on the Lake:

- Moana Trout Fishing Safaris and Lake Tours
- Fishing for trout on New Zealand’s West Coast of the South Island is a treat not to be missed! Lake Brunner holds excellent stocks of wild brown trout averaging 4 pounds and the area is virtually uncrowded for most of the season – most of the time you won’t see another fisherman!

- The West Coast is almost synonymous with the Monteiths Brewing Company – established in 1868, it is the home of New Zealand’s craft brewing industry.
- Stop in for a bite to eat on your travels. Sample their range and if you find something you like chances are you’ll be able to drink it throughout the West Coast – this is, after all, Monteith’s Country! See their website and book brewery tours here.
