This inland lake is the largest of the West Coast’s many lakes and is the 19th biggest lake by area in New Zealand. It’s Māori name, Moana Kotuku, means ‘Sea of Herons.’ Today the majestic White Heron can still be spotted fishing among the reeds around the lake edge.
