It’s Māori name, Moana Kotuku, means ‘Sea of Herons.’ Today the majestic White Heron can still be spotted fishing among the reeds around the lake edge.

The Kingfisher Restaurant and Bar serves as the main reception for the hotel. Our kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. Choose to dine in the restaurant or bar, or soak in the mountain views from our front deck. Our menu is seasonal, and changes in the Summer and Winter months to allow us to serve local produce. Enjoy small bites, pizzas and burgers, pub classics and asian-inspired dishes, delivered to you by our international chefs.

Moana township and Hotel Lake Brunner are the perfect base for your West Coast holiday. It is only 2.5 hours drive from Christchurch, while Hokitika airport and Punakaiki Pancake Rocks are only an hour away. Travelling down the Coast? It is only 3 short hours from Lake Brunner to Franz Josef glacier. Catch the world famous Tranz Alpine train from Christchurch or Greymouth, and enjoy the stopover.

Pavi took our booking and from then on made sure our trip was memorable. He met us from the TranzAlpine train and took us to our room giving us a some local background as we went. Whenever we appeared in the main building of the hotel he was there to welcome us and sort out whatever we needed. We enjoyed a delicious dinner and later he made sure our hot tub was ready as he had arranged an especially late booking as I wanted to be under the stars - not so easy in summer! The room was spacious and clean with a comfy bed and super view over the lake. A late checkout was accommodated so we could walk on a local trail before freshening up for a fab breakfast on the terrace before Pavi took us back to the staion for our train.

We went in for a coffee. We ended up with coffee and a muffin. Coffee was excellent and also the muffin was nice and tasty. Service was good and the view was exceptional.

Lovely spot Great spot, clean well appointed rooms. Ours had a view of the lake. The bar is nice with a big deck overlooking the lake. Recommend doing the lake Brunner scenic walk

Great stay, do the Lake Brunner scenic trail Highly recommend this friendly hotel in Lake Brunner Township. Friendly staff, quickly sorted out our missing booking and upgraded our room. Views of the Lake, well set up room and very comfortable bed. Definitely recommend doing the Lake Brunner scenic trail - an epic walk or run.

Great stay but could be improved We really enjoyed the beautiful lake view, the tasty food, the cosy fireplace (especially in the morning at breakfast), and the very helpful staff who kindly dropped us at the train station and looked after our dietary requirements. Thank you! However, we wouldn’t rate 4 stars because some aspects of the accommodation were disappointing. One of the young waitresses seemed irritated, which didn’t feel very welcoming. The bathroom and kitchen were very old and not functional: there was no fan or heater, and when we cooked, the table and floor ended up covered in water from the steam, even with the doors open. The kitchen utensils were very basic and there were no decent sharp knives, which made cooking a bit difficult. The bedroom itself was comfy and we could see that effort had been put into it, but it was quite noisy, with staff talking loudly in the nearby office early in the morning. Overall, the insulation wasn’t great, which affected our rest.

overnight stay at Moana Hotel Lake Brunner We travelled from Christchurch on the Trans Apline train and stayed at the Moana Hotel Lake Brunner over night with adult family members (3 couples). Really enjoyed our stay - the staff Chanelle in particular - was very helpful. Picking us up from the train and taking us to the Hotel, then back to the train the next day to carry on to Greymouth. The Moana Hotel has a lovely country pub atmosphere but also with a separate dining room and lovely meals - warm, welcoming fires in both areas. We were reluctant to leave and will definitely be back. l

A beautiful way to enjoy your stay at Lake Brunner Beautiful comfortable unit that was toasty warm and had stunning views. We stayed with friends and ate at the restaurant after lots of cycles and walks and loved the atmosphere and fires. The staff were friendly and helpful . The hotel is in a perfect place to access the TransAlpine train and to access the walks and cycles.

Welcoming service Katherine and her crew made us so welcome. When they learned it was our 50th wedding anniversary they provided us with a complimentary bottle of champagne, discounted our expresso and looked after our every comfort. We enjoyed the hot tub and the meals were great and the solitude of Lake Brunner itself was soothing.

Comfy room, good food. Lucky for me a room became available last minute for Waitangi weekend. Room was good, warm, comfy. A little noisy but not unbearably. On check in it was recommended to book for dinner as it was busy which I did. My meal was absolutely delicious, service was great.
